. our susan candiotti joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> and of course the question is, why an attack on this 34-year-old diplomat who had been in the country for about eight years now working at the nicaraguan mission. cesar mercado. and police found not one but two knives. and they weren't found next to his body. they were found in the bathroom of the small studio apartment where the diplomat lived. cesar mercado, apparently one of the knives were a steak knife according to new york police commissioner paul brown. and he says it was found near the bathroom sink and the sink was filled with blood, unfortunately. and the second knife was a smaller paring knife and that was found inside the sink. so why the positioning of the knives? so many questions to be answered here. his body was found just inside the front door. and when the driver came, the door was unlocked. he opened it up, looked inside, saw the body, and immediately called the police. so they have a lot to try to figure out. his throat, indeed, was cut. and they also said that he was stabbed in the stomach. so

. i'm bret baier. supporters of the u.s. military policy against openly gay personnel scores a major victory today. but half a world away, american service members mourn the loss of several u.s. troops in a tragic accident. as a nato helicopter went down in southern afghanistan, making this the deadliest year in almost nine-year war. reporter conor powell has details from from kabul. >> reporter: helicopter crashes are fairly common in afghanistan, most due to mechanical failure and sometimes weather. in the past, taliban hit and brought down u.s. and international helicopters. in this case, the military says there are no reports of enemy fire in the area when the helicopter went down. they're discounting taliban claims they shot down the helicopter. the helicopter went down in an area that was a violent and nasty part of afghanistan where the taliban do roam free and are very, very strong. in addition to the nine u.s. troops killed, three other people including a u.s. civilian were also injured. today's deaths bring the total number of foreign troops killed to 529, a single-year rec

miklaszewski joins us now. describe his actions that brought him to the recognition of superiors. >> reporter: contessa, sergeant j unta's story leaps off the pages. he joined the army straight out of high school in cedar rapids in the heart of the nation's farm belt and three years ago he was involved in an action, platoon was on patrol about midnight on a bright moonlit night and they were ambushed by taliban fighters. he himself was knocked to the ground knocked in the chest by two enemy bullets and leaped to his feet to run right into the hail of gun fire. throwing grenades and shooting all the way. he found one of the fellow soldiers wounded being dragged away by two taliban fighters. he killed one of those taliban the other taliban made a flight away. and then he temporarily dragged that soldier to safety. unfortunately, that soldier later died and another soldier died in that action but for his heroics, the white house announced last week that sergeant giunta that joined at 18 years old would be awarded the medal of honor in probably late octobe
